OTTAWA, June 29, 2008 - "Beginning in the 1870s and terminating in 1952, three people were hanged in the indoor gallows at the Renfrew County Courthouse.

All that’s being hung these days, however, are balloons and bunting as staff prepare for tomorrow’s grand reopening of the reconstructed downtown complex ..."

This article includes details on the festivities planned for the opening of this courthouse consolidation project which was designed and implemented by NORR Limited.

The reconstruction, which combines historical elements with new construction, contains a total of six courtrooms and related support facilities including judicial chambers, administration offices, as well as holding and secure drop-off facilities.

The finished product features a multi-storey atrium wrapping around the original courtroom and exposing a portion of the historical jail building which was a separate structure on the site but is now incorporated as an integral part of the new building.

The project has been in instrumental in revitalizing the area and has received an Award of Merit from the American Institute of Architects and an Award of Merit-Collaborative from the Association of Registered Interior Designer of Ontario (ARIDO).
