Unique steel design earns attention for Peace Bridge customs plaza, June 26, 2008

TORONTO, June 26, 2008 - "Customs buildings have a reputation of being dull, monolithic structures. The Fort Erie Customs Plaza, anchoring the Canadian side of the Peace Bridge kicks that image in the teeth with a glue laminated timber shell supported by slender white steel columns, with the offices tucked neatly under one end. ...."

This article details the unique design features and challenges in this border crossing and discussed the reasons behind the decision to use steel vs. poured concrete. As this site was an active border crossing location the plaza had to remain fully functional throughout the construction period. The speed of construction was also considered essential to the projects success - minimizing the impact that the construction would have on the day-to-day activities of this busy border crossing.

Editorial Note: The project's unique shape and use of materials also led to its being recognized for its use of wood by the Canadian Wood Council from whom it received a 2007 Wood Design Merit Award.
