NORR was selected through an open Canadian Design Competition to design facilities for Canadian Customs and Immigration agencies for improvements to the Peace Bridge’s Canadian Plaza. The landmark Peace Bridge Authority (PBA) project’s design reflects “a new Canadian image of confidence and sophistication”, while paying homage to the history of the Fort Erie region. The design makes strong reference to the historic stone
construction of the local buildings and historical fortress. It is inspired by native shelter and canoe design as well as archeological artifacts from the Peace Bridge site.
The curving wood roof of the central Customs and Immigration Building creates an embracing space that is materially warm and friendly, making the adjacent vehicle
inspection area atmosphere less intimidating. A central skylight runs the full length of the roof, bringing natural light deep into two-storey building. The nearby Administration Building and Refugee Processing Building are treated as relatively solid stone masses that relate to the stone retaining traffic barrier wall blurring the distinction between landscape and buildings.
